Horse Nutrition Tips

Basic Horse Nutrition

You have a beautiful horse and I am sure you want it to be strong and healthy. In order for your horse to be healthy, it needs a good horse nutrition adapted to its breed. The first step is choosing the diet that is appropriate for him. The right diet depends on the required nutrients of the particular class of horse.

Veterinarians and farmers mix these ingredients to come up with the required horse nutrition nutrient content for that horse class. Surely, the owner has a say on the ingredients. With the guidance of the farmer, the owner can choose the appropriate quantity of roughage for the horse.

A horse's basic nutrition diet must contain pasture or any kind of harvested roughage. The energy intake and the digestive tract fill is determined by playing up the distribution of roughage and its concentrates. It also reduces dysfunctions in the digestive system. Plus, the horse's consumption of feeds is regulated.

Horse Nutrition Facts

The key in feeding horses is that , every day, they must be fed at least 1% of their total weight. This allows them to use up 2 to 2.5% of their body mass in the 24-hour interval.

The energy needs are lower than the stated figures when feeding adult horses. It could be done by feeding them with roughages that are of good-quality. Salt is the supplement needed in adult horses. This is a balanced mineral supplement.

When feeding pregnant mares, be cautious because their diet has to be a combination of both roughages and concentrates. These are measured in the horsenutrition required amounts so that the mare will be able to store up body fat which will be utilized for lactating and rebreeding.

When feeding growing horses, the required horse nutrition nutrient needs has to be known so that the pony can get to the optimal growth. This will result to a well-structure and well-developed development phase. There is less chance for growing horses to suffer orthopaedic diseases by providing them with a balanced diet.

Horse Nutrition Advice

For growing horses, a balanced diet is when all the nutrients are provided in the required quantities making these relative to one another. Diets for growing horses has to be balanced according to their energy consumption.

When feeding foals, you have to give them the appropriate supplements before the weaning period. If a mare is not a good milker, then the foal will suffer from diseases. This is the time for the owner to take some actions in the foals' health.

In the livestock industry the practice of horsenutrition using growth stimulants, additives and antibiotics are said to be helpful but there is few conducted research that shows it has the same outcome on horses. According to some studies, horses benefit from these kinds of medicines - but they are only said to be of short-term only. So in my opinion it is safer and it makes more sense to think long-term and give to your horse a nutrition of a great quality. Horses have been around for centuries and centuries, they know what is best for them.
